BURKE
KEEGAN
Burke Keegan began fundraising in 1976 as
most people do, out of necessity. She worked in the Free
Clinic Movement and was raising money to protect health
care as a right, not a privilege. Charter member of the
“Trial and Error” school of fundraising, she
wrote letters that no one answered, produced events that
no one attended, and wrote grants with a mimeograph machine.
Eventually she figured out how it all worked, fundraising
for Freedom Community Clinic and others. |
She worked for the Grantsmanship Center in Los Angeles for
two years, traveling the country – Houston, Seattle, Boston,
San Francisco, Portland – teaching their five-day Fundraising
course.
In 1982 she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and opened
her own business, Burke Keegan Boards and Fundraising. In those
23 years she worked intensely with and trained a vast array
of nonprofit organizations and wrote her very popular book,
Fundraising for Non-Profits, HarperCollins. She became
known for her innovative approaches to problem-solving, her
uncompromising ethics, and her wicked sense of humor.
In 2005, Burke decided that it was time to change the paradigm
of how Consultants provide services and charge for their expertise.
She found that project and campaign consulting is effective
but doesn’t often address the challenges of day to day
fundraising and nonprofit management. Executive Directors, Directors
of Development and Board Leaders plan, hire, supervise, evaluate,
recruit, meet with donors and deal with volunteers and funders
often by the seat of their pants.
So Burke forged an alliance with Essex & Drake to launch
an innovative consulting service -- The Coaching Project
-- which offers regular access to Burke’s expertise on
a subscription basis. Available when you need her by phone or
email, Burke takes a more intimate and personal approach to
helping nonprofit Executives make informed decisions.
Burke is currently writing the second, updated edition of Fundraising
for Nonprofits and dedicating all of her professional time
and energy to The Coaching Project, serving as its Executive
Head Coach. For details on how you can have Burke as your own
personal Coach, contact Sharon@essexdrake.com or phone (408)
